Monument for Reconstruction

1 Genesis of Monument for Reconstruction

Monument for Reconstruction is a work where I confront the utopian forms of the project New Babylon by the Dutch artist Constant NIEUWENHUYS (1920-2005), also known as Constant, to those of suburban and industrial areas. Developed in 1954, New Babylon is a project for an ideal city in which an ideal humanity was to be refounded on a new basis, built up like a hanging garden; it was designed as a place of accomplishment and fulfillment for its inhabitants. His utopia seems too complex to exist on earth, so Constant NIEUWENHUYS plans to build his social city on the moon, free from all urbanism and life, there where a revolution of mentalities wouldn't be necessary.
